9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers

Mission Statement
To perpetuate the memory of comrades who have passed. To promote and perpetuate the history, traditions and outstanding contributions, of the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry Regiments in the defense of our country.
What We Do
We pay homage to the legacy left behind by these courageous men and women. Their contributions are many and will always have a place in American history. The Baltimore Metropolitan Chapter strives to keep their legacy alive through lectures, presentations, photos of historic picture displays and cavalry memorabilia. The Buffalo Soldiers

It is believed that sixteen months after the end of the Civil War congress instituted proposed a new Act Section 3 entitled "An Act to increase and fix the Military Peace Establishment of the United States" . The Act was approved on 28 July 1866. Congress authorized the formation two regiments of cavalry to be composed of "colored" men. These units were comprised of former slaves, freemen and civil war soldiers. On September 21, 1866, the 9th Cavalry Regiment was the first formed and activated at Greenville, Louisiana and the 10th Cavalry Regiment was activated at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments were under the competent leadership of Colonels Edward Hatch and Benjamin Grierson.
