One Hundred Acts of Kindness

Trooper Joan Cruise of the Baltimore Chapter has been a Sewing Instructor for Baltimore County Community College for eight years. She devotes much of her time teaching sewing instruction to her favorite students at the Waxter Center for Senior Citizens in Baltimore Maryland. The Waxter Center offers opportunities for seniors to engage with others, to stay healthy and enhance their education. During the Houston Texas devastation caused by torrential rains and floods, the center watched a news snippet of seniors waiting to be rescued while they sat in flood waters up to their waist. A student commented, “This could be us, what can we do?” For those who know Trooper Joan Cruise, knows that she is a very talented seamstress, a good cook and a harder worker and would not stand by and do nonething. She challenged her students to use their learned skills to make flannel bathrobes for nursing home senior residents that were evacuated during of the flood.
Trooper Joan acquired all the fabric and materials needed to make the robes. The Joan Ann Fabric stores of Dover, Delaware and Ownings Mills, Maryland give discounts on the fabric. Eleven of her students volunteered to cut patterns and sew two days a week until they made 100 flannel bathrobes. The Greater North Carolina and Texas Buffalo Soldier Chapters were able to connect Trooper Joan with a contact person for the Nursing home. Once the bathrobes were boxed and ready to ship to Texas, Trooper Cruise asked the Baltimore Chapter for help with getting the robes shipped. The Baltimore Chapter paid the cost to have the robes shipped to Houston Texas.
Trooper Joan Cruise and the students at the Waxter Senior Center are to be commended for their ability to understand and share the feelings of those affected by the storm. 04/2018
