Buffalo Soldier 1st Sgt. Augustus Walley was honored by the Maryland Museum of Military History on February 13th 2018. In his honor one of the museum’s exhibition rooms was named the 1st Sgt. Augustus Walley room. A memorable moment for the family of the 1st Sergeant was the unveiling of a life size mannequin that was a precise measurement of his figure, skin tone, hair, down to the private’s uniform. Coronel Drew Sullins, Director of Operations for the Maryland National Guard proudly spoke in detail of Walley’s career as “a very distinguished military career”. 1st Sgt. Augustus Walley was awarded a Medal of Honor for his bravery while in the 9th Cavalry. He was denied the second Medal of Honor but was awarded a certificate for gallantry during the Spanish-American War, when he helped rescue the squad’s commander.
Now that the Maryland Museum is aware of Walley’s military record, the family can only hope this will draw the much needed attention to get the second Medal of Honor for 1st Sgt. Augustus Walley.
In attendance at Tuesday’s ceremony was the family Troopers Betty Stokes, Talaya Johnson, Lois Stokes, Lisa Stokes Thorn, and Gregory Thorn. All are members of the Baltimore Chapter. In addition to the attendance were members of the Baltimore Chapter.
The Maryland Military Historical Society, Inc. Fifth Regiment Armory is located at 29th Division Street, Baltimore, Maryland. The museum continues to embrace the contributions of African Americans from the State of Maryland.
