William McKinley Decatur
Trooper Jerome Hall
William McKinley Decatur was assigned to Machine Gun, Troop F, 10th Cavalry, Fort Myer, Virginia in 1942. Mr. Decatur was born in Chicago, and reared in Akron, Ohio. He was drafted into the Regular Army on September 23, 1941, with an initial assignment at the Cavalry School at Fort Riley, Kansas.
He was assigned to the 10th Cavalry Regiment, that was later changed to a detachment. When war declared in December of 1941, he was retained until December 11, 1945. On April 5, 1942, Trooper Decatur was transferred to Machine Gun, Troop F, 10th Cavalry. His unit primarily took care of the officer's horses, transporting prisoners, and was in charge of burial details of deceased Black military persons at Arlington, Virginia. When his enlistment expired in November 1945, he got out of the service.
Mr. Decatur married Alma T. Lee in 1946. They have three sons: Samuel T. Lukas, John Robert Lukas, and Anthony Lukas. They also have six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Jerome Hall, affectionately known to his family and friends as "Andrew" was born on July 24, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland. Jerome entered the United States Army Forces in the early 1950's, serving in the United States Army for a total of twenty-six years.
He served in the Korean war and the Vietnam Conflict where he was the recipient of many decorations and medals. He achieved one of the highest ranks that is bestowed upon an enlisted service man-the rank of Sergeant Major. He received the following medals: Good Conduct Medal w/Silver Clasp, Bronze Star medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Army Occupation Medal, Air Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm, Vietnam service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Medical Badge, Master parachute badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Sharpshooter Badge Rifle M-14 and M-16.
Jerome Hall was a Charter member of the Baltimore Metropolitan Area Chapter of the 9th & 10th(HORSE) Cavalry Association "The Buffalo Soldiers". He participated in the functions and traveled all over the country to be a part of the activities in other states. Jerome quiet in nature as well as soft spoken. Hall was a very kind, caring, compassionate and generous person. He was well respected and loved by his family, friends and fellow "Troopers".
